Hair Color Ideas And Advice

There is no quicker way to get a hairstyle change without actually doing a lot of cutting, than to add hair color. If you are not used to having your hair colored though, you should begin with a gradual hair color change until you know how it suits you.

What I mean with that, is beginning with some low lights that are close to your natural color. ... article continued below »

Low lights are a few strands of hair here and there that are darker than your natural color. In this manner, if coloring turns out not to be your cup of tea, it won't take long to return you to your normal color with minimal impact on your life and your finances.

A few well placed highlights, (going lighter) will also work, but require a bit of bleaching. You can't lift color with hair color. Bleaching is by nature a more intrusive procedure. Whatever you do, DO NOT attempt to save a few bucks by coloring your hair yourself. No matter what the add's say, coloring hair is not for amateurs. It almost always ends in disaster and will cost you hundreds for a color correction, if it is even possible. I have seen where there was no option but to cut the hair off. Needless to say this can be very traumatic.

In selecting a hair color your skin tone is a major consideration. Very fair skinned people can pull off almost any color, but if your skin has a red tone to it, you should avoid any red or gold colors. Medium skinned people are rather restricted to shades of brown or an ash blonde. Dark skinned people should stick to hair colors that contain blue, violet, or even burgundy. I often see fair skinned people with red in their skin trying to pull off red hair, and dark skinned people trying to pull off blonde, and in my opinion it just doesn't work.

In addition, your hair color choice should compliment your eye color and your wardrobe colors, or your hair color just won't pop out right and look good.

Then of course there are the bold primary colors to play with. These can be a lot of fun so long as it does not cause issues in a professional work environment. These colors are almost always semi or demi colors and need to be refreshed every two or three weeks as the color molecules fall off and the color fades. These colors also require a clean slate to begin with, which means a lot of bleach, sometimes several bleachings. Needless to say this is very hard on your hair, and your hair can only withstand so much chemical treatment before it is fried and needs to be cut off. That said, if you have the time, money, and adventure spirit, these hair colors are dramatic and fun.

You can also add color to your hair with color thread hair wraps, or some clip in hair color extensions that can be removed the next day when you go to work.

Lastly, as I write this it is almost Halloween, and here are a few words of caution. Temporary colors DO NOT wash out the day after Halloween. It takes weeks for these colors to fade, and even then they leave a color hue behind. We used to make a fortune every year in my salon when people arrived in the salon in panic because the color they bought at the beauty supply store didn't wash out, and they can't go to work looking the way they do. There are however some color sprays that just deposit color flakes on top of the hair, and these do wash out for the most part.

In this gallery I put together a wide variety of color ideas from the subtle, to the eye popping. I hope this advice can help you with your hair color choices a little.
